November 9, 2010 - THE W. ALDEN SPENCER AWARD is given each year by the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University to investigators in recognition of outstanding research contributions in neural science. The 2010 Spencer Award recognizes Marc Tessier-Lavigne and S. Lawrence Zipursky for their seminal contributions.

Neural Circuits Symposium 2010October 7, 2010- Neural Circuits Symposium from 8:30 AM - 6 PM in the Neuroscience Research Building Auditorium. This symposium was organized by Jack Feldman, Kelsey Martin, and Larry Zipursky and was made possible with generous support from the UCLA Chancellor's Office, Brain Research Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine Dean's Office, UCLA NIH Training Grant in Neural Microcircuits, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, Departments of Biological Chemistry, Neurobiology and Neurology, the UCLA Center for Neurobehavioral Genetics, and the UCLA-ACNP Center for the Study of the History of Neuropsychopharmacology.

September 3, 2010 - Dr. Kathrin Plath published a study in the journal "Cell Stem Cell" showing that induced pluripotent stem cells retain an inactive X chromosome that may create a model for muscular dystrophy, X-linked diseases.. News release. CIRM Research Results Associated Press

September 2010 - Ritchie Ho (mentor Kathrin Plath) is chosen to receive a Paul Boyer Outstanding Teaching Award. In recognition of this achievement he will receive a check for $1000 and a certificate at the 2010 MBI Lake Arrowhead Retreat.

Rachel Senturia (mentor Feng Guo) is awarded the Audree Fowler Fellowship in Protein Science. Each awardee receives up to $4000 to be used for scientific travel, books, supplies, computers, and software. The award will be presented at the MBI retreat in Lake Arrowhead October 15-17, 2010.

The 12th Annual MBI Postdoctoral Recognition Awards recognized Ohtan Wang, Ph.D. (mentor: Kelsey Martin) as the recipient of the Parvin Foundation Award. Postdoctoral Merit Awardees included Mark Chin (mentor Kathrin Plath) and Gustavo Miranda-Carboni (mentor Tim Lane).
