The Department of Biological Chemistry/ UCLA-DOE Institute (http://www.biolchem.ucla.edu/), a basic science department within the UCLA School of Medicine, invites highly qualified applications for positions as Assistant Researcher. Qualified candidates with a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, molecular, cell biology, or related fields, are encouraged to apply.

Job Duties:

  1. Standard molecular biology techniques including construction and preparation of recombinant bacterial plasmids for expression of proteins in bacteria.

  2. Synthesis of peptides, carrying natural and non-natural amino acids.

  3. Affinity purification, HPLC and mass spectrometry analysis of peptides and protein.

  4. Protein aggregation assays, such as Thioflavin T or Congo Red assays.

  5. Electron microscopy of amyloid fibrils and samples of interest.

  6. Protein gel electrophoresis under denaturing and non-denaturing conditions.

  7. Western-blot and dot-blot techniques for the detection of amyloid proteins.

  8. Preparation of cell lines and primary neuronal cultures.

  9. Cell-based toxicity assays, including analysis of the cell cycle phase, the level of reactive oxygen species, apoptosis,

    viability, metabolic activity etc.

  10. Structural analysis of peptides and proteins, by x-ray crystallography, circular dichroism (CD) and nuclear magnetic

    resonance (NMR), among other techniques.

  11. Design and perform in vivo experiments to study amyloid diseases.

  12. Analysis of data generated from in vivo experiments.

  13. Take appropriate actions to optimize and troubleshoot individual techniques as well as overall experiments. Recognize

    and take appropriate action when extended or repeated tests are required to produce meaningful results.
