2016 Carole E. Goldberg Emeriti Service Award Recipients Named
Two UCLA Emeriti Professors have been selected to receive the 2016 Carole E. Goldberg Emeriti Service Award, which recognizes emeriti for exemplary post-retirement service to UCLA and includes a prize of $1,000. The awards will be presented at the UCLA Emeriti Association dinner on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Faculty Center.
Ulrich Batzdorf, MD has served UCLA for more than 50 years and has been an important figure in neurosurgery both locally and nationally. At UCLA he has been a leader in education in neurosurgery and a moral compass for his department and his colleagues everywhere. Since his retirement in 1998 he has not diminished his efforts. He attends departmental conferences, assists in the operating room, gives lectures, organizes conferences for the residents, and is one of their important mentors. He attends national meetings and his voice and opinions are widely respected. He is the department ombuds officer and is trusted to settle issues fairly and thoughtfully. He serves on the medical center’s Value Analysis Committee, the Professional Services Compliance Committee, and the Sherman Mellinkoff Faculty Award Selection Committee, and was one of the earliest recipients of that award. His receipt of the Goldberg Emeriti Service Award honors him and honors his dedication to us all.
Elizabeth Neufeld, PhD is a giant in science, a world renowned biochemist and a geneticist, who has done truly ground breaking work in understanding and treating lysosomal storage disorders and who led the UCLA Department of Biological Chemistry with vision and effectiveness. With her retirement from active service in 2009, she has been a dynamic assistant dean for academic affairs in the David Geffen School of Medicine. She reads each of the many hundreds of dossiers that require actions yearly, learns the science, assesses the candidates, and provides thoughtful and caring feedback to each as well as effective advocacy in the academic advancement process. The Goldberg Emeriti Service award is but one more honor in a long list of recognitions that this remarkable scientist and university citizen has received.
Please join me in wishing them all a well-deserved congratulations for outstanding academic and university service in their respective fields since retirement and for serving as powerful examples of intellectual and professional achievement.
Sincerely,
Carole Goldberg
